I've had problems with the heater belt coming apart where the cord goes into the plastic outer that protects the elements. I believe I've read of this elsewhere in the forum.
I've now reinforced this joint with duck tape, however this has made the thicker part of the belt slightly longer. This causes an additional problem that at the lower part of the fermenting bin it's too loose to hold itself in position. I've overcome this by glueing the hook part of brass picture hooks available from B & Q and Woolies around the lower part of the bin. If you try this be careful of what adhesive you use as some will disolve the plastic of the bin. I originally intended to hook the belt into the hook but this holds the belt away from the wall of the bin so I now just rest it on top. My wife appreceats them too as the wine and beer making has moved from the kitchen to the garage. Written By: Richard Mcdonald (21 August 2008) I wouldn't homebrew without it! I have bought quite alot of gear / gadgets to do with homebrewing and i have to say this is the best thing i have ever bought when it comes to hombrewing. If you have one of these you will wonder how you ever got by without it! Written By: Paul Church (12 March 2008) An excellent device which got fermentation started within a few hours, compared to about 24 hours in the warmest place in the house (under the stairs next to the boiler!) Written By: John Wright (27 March 2006) I used to put my fermenting bin next to a radiator in my spare room as I thought that was fine. After I bought and used a heater belt I can see how wrong I was! This is a brilliant bit of kit which I wish I had bought from the start. Very simple - just put around the fermenting bin and plug in (it heats up quite quickly). I put it near the bottom of the barrel (obviously as this is where the must is) and my brew was soon fermenting away like crazy. This helps keep a more stable temperature so the yeast is happier! Definetly worth buying one - it saves you worrying if the barrel is warm enough and you end up with a better brew! Written By: Andrew Kennedy (26 December 2005)
