I used brewers white sugar and added finings before racking into the barrel. After 3 weeks in the barrel the beer is light golden although not sparkling clear (in the old days we would just use a stone mug if the beer didn't clear properly). The result is .. well, superb! It is a very pleasant ale, not with a strong taste but it is quite strong. It has a very well rounded but not oversweet malty taste which reminds me of the venerable Brakspeare's Draft.
Great value and a kit I will use again and would wholeheatedly recommend to anyone.
Now... what shall I try next? Written By: Bryan Payne (09 July 2008) Probably one of the best bitters I've done wrt flavour. The dried malt, for some reason, seemed to make it easier to prepare. Very happy with this one. Written By: Len Phillips (21 December 2007) this was my first brew after a 2 year brake from brewing , i have to say i personally found this beer much better that the muntons gwr strong bitter . i added 1.5 kg or brewing sugar and 1kg of normal sugar .....
the result was a very nice tasting bitter for Christmas , and about 7.,2% to boot
its a good beer to to your first brew with as its not expensive , i have to give this beer 4 out of 5 . and would strongly advise that you leave it alone for at least 3 weeks until drinking .... it gets much better with age Written By: Scott Macrae (14 November 2007) Lovely rich malty nutty flavour and surprisingly strong. Light to drink but very tasty. 1 ltr was quite enough at a time, any more was a serious "session".
I made it up with brewing sugar and 500g of spray malt, and let it ferment 2 whole weeks in the primary bin with a heater belt. 4 weeks after bottling it was very good, the last few (~10 weeks) were simply marvellous.
Not a hint of "homebrew" taste. Written By: Daniel Mcshane (19 September 2007) This was my second brew and i was impressed. Its quick to brew and tastes great, considering its quite a strong brew it tastes quite light and is very easy to drink, tastes just like a pub real ale but it did take a while to clear in the barrell, in fact it still hasnt completely cleared after five weeks, but it does taste good. I can recommend it. Written By: Simon Plummer (20 June 2007)
